John was born in 1896. He married Doris May Seeds at Wirksworth, 1923. In 1939, the family were living at Toadhole Furnace, Oakerthorpe, and John worked as a colliery hewer.

A quiet wedding at Belper on Saturday was that between Mr John Yates of Plaistow Green, Crich and Miss Doris May Seeds, daughter of Mr and Mrs Ernest Seeds of Wash Green, Wirksworth.

John Yates's brother George Yates is also on the Roll of Honour.
