Biography
Sam was born in 1881 at Ripley. He attested in December 1916 at Derby, aged thirty-five, a married fruiterer living on the Common, Crich. He had married Elizabeth Eperson in December 1907 at Belper. He was discharged in November 1917 owing to osteo-arthritis (attributed to his service). He had a weekly pension of 27s 6d for four weeks and then 5s 6d per week thereafter. Sam’s brother-in-law, Edwin Eperson, is also on the Roll of Honour. With his wife he ran a fish and chip shop at Belper.
Census records and his army record record him as Sam Swindell not Samuel.

His height was 5ft 4¼in and the next of kin was his wife Elizabeth Swindell (nèe Eperson) whom he married on 11/12/07 at Belper. Their children were children Elizabeth (7/10/09), Grace (21/07/12), Francis (17/11/13), Albert (15/03/15) and Kathleen (04/04/16). His discharge was 01/11/17 owing to osteo arthritis (attributed to his service). Weekly pension of 27s 6d for four weeks then 5s 6d per week. It was recorded that he was not entitled to the Silver War Badge. Discharge address was Whatstandwell.
