Charles Limb obtained a conditional exemption in March 1917 however, he was called up and joined the forces on 10th April, 1917 aged 22 years. After the war he again worked at Lea Mills.

Dear Sirs
I have great pleasure in thanking you for the nice parcel you sent me which I received on Sep 5th and I can tell you it gave me great pleasure to think it had come from the firm which I worked at till I had to join up for a soldier but I hope someday when this great war is over to be able to come back to Lea Mills and work amoung the winning fellows in the factory again who will be glad to see us all back again safe and sound and I have great pleasure in telling you that I am quiet well and happy under the circumstances which I am going through hoping this letter will find you quiet safe. I have great pleasure in thanking you for the nice Christmas Gift you sent me of Under Wear which arrived to me quiet safely and I am please to tell you they will come in very usefull out here because the weather is bitterly cold and I can assure you I shall be very please when this great War is over so I can come back and work peacefully again at Lea Mills hoping this letter will find you in the Best of Health as it leaves me the same and wishing you a most successfull New Year From one of your Working Hands

Dear Sirs,
I have great pleasure in thanking you for the nice parcel you sent me which I received a few days ago but owing to being very busy I have been unable to reply to it till now but I am sure it gave me great pleasure in knowing it had come from the Managers and Directors of Lea Mills which I used to Work for and I allso hope that when this great War is over I shall be able to carry on the same as I did before I joined the Army along with my fellow worker’s.
M/305619, Pte. C Limb, M T, A S C, attached 231 Siege Battery at B E F, France, I received a letter from home and they told me there were a great many Holloway Boy’s being wounded in this great struggle which a few of them used to work at Lea Mills but owing to the great puches [pushes?] it as been a very dreadful time for every body but I am very please to say that I think the end is in sight. I must now conclude hoping this letter will find you quite safe and wishing you the best of luck with the Firm of Lea Mills. I remain your’s Sincerely C Limb.
