He lived at Starkholmes and worked as a framework knitter. Although an exemption was applied for in March 1917 only a temporary one was granted. Henry Whiteman Jones joined the forces on 21st July, 1917 aged 36 years. After the was he returned to work at Lea Mills

Dear Sir
I am just sending a few lines to let you know that I have received that very welcome parcel which you and your brother so kindly sent to me. I sincerely wish to thank you both, and should like to say that these little kindnesses and good wishes from those who we have had to leave behind, come as a gleam of sunshine into our lives out here. The parcel arrived on Jan 30th in perfect condition. I see it has been three weeks on the road by the date upon it. I find the life out here very different to the beautiful home life of England, but I do not wish to complain. When I knew I had to come out here I came with the determination of doing my best, and being cheerful over it. I find if we have hard, rough, and dirty work to do, that it is best to do it heartily, and with a smile, rather than grumble and do it reluctantly. I have seen some awful sights, but have so far come out safe myself, and I hope before long we may all be able to return to the old life, and to those whom we have left at home. Again thanking you, and wishing you the compliments of the Season, and all good wishes for the future prosperity of the firm.
