He had a serious cycle accident at Wigwell on 12 September 1915
when a cart knocked him down causing serious injuries. Despite the severity of his injuries he was still enlisted on 31 July 1916. He applied for exemption in March 1917 but this was turned down. Eventually his disability was such that he was declared unfit for service and was discharged with the Silver War Badge awarded to him.

Injured at Wigwell, Derbyshire. Was riding a cycle when was knocked down by a cart. Unconscious for one week. Sustained wounds of arm and head (left side head wound - fracture of skull and left cheekbone) Arm – flesh wound
To injury received before enlistment. Healed wound of face. Vision with left eye good but owing to ? paralysis has Diplopia.
Motor disorder of eye: injury to face, hand and eye in civil life. Diplopia in both ? and {unreadable text} Headaches in consequence of double vision
