Herbert Victor Rowley

Herbert Victor Rowley was born in Crich on 20 October 1897 son of Arthur and Agnes Rowley. His father was a Church of England clergyman serving in Crich Parish at the time of his birth. By 1901 the family had moved into Nottinghamshire from where Herbert joined the Royal Naval Air Service in 1916.

On 1 April 1918 the RNAS and RFC amagamated to form the RAF. It was on this day that he claimed his ninth victory.

He continued to serve with the RAF after the war and retired as an Air Commodore at the end of 1944.
