Frederick, born in 1873, was one of the thirteen children of William Patilla and Mary (née Fletcher), a Brackenfield family. In April 1911 he married Sarah Saunders of Lindway Lane; the Saunders family were also a well-known Brackenfield family. He worked as a farm labourer before enlisting, aged forty-three, in January 1917. Initially he was with the Railway Corps of the Royal Engineers, but while serving in France and Belgium between February 1917 and January 1919 he was a labourer on the roads. During December 1918 he was in hospital with influenza and on demob in March 1919, was in Middlesex War Hospital with rheumatism. His first cousin, George Patilla, is also on the Roll of Honour.

The next of kin was his wife Sarah (nèe Saunders) whom he married at Brackenfield 17/04/11. They had a daughter Ada Louise Patilla born 12/11/06. His last employer was Mr Magerrison of Tupton Hall.
