Biography
George was one of the oldest Crich Parish men to serve. Born at Crich, he later moved to Sheffield where he worked on the trams and as a boiler fireman. He enlisted in 1914 at the age of forty-four and was posted to the 10th (Service) Battalion, Rifle Brigade. He was discharged in October the same year, so he only served for a month.

He attested 5 September 1914 at Sheffield; a married 44 year-old fireman, born at Crich, Derbyshire. His wife was Ada Barnes whom he married 7 July 1894 at Sheffield. They had five children: Drusilla, Martha Lily, Fred, Clarice Alice, Bernard. Address Colridge Road, Attercliffe, Sheffield. Height 5ft 5in,weight 135lb, blue eyes and dark brown hair; C of E.; scar on right and left eyebrows
