John was born in Whatstandwell in about 1885, the son of Robert and Maria Lowe. Before the war in 1910 he married Susan Margaret Cupit and lived at Somercotes where he worked for miller and baker J.A. Taylor. He joined the Army, at Somercotes, in February 1914, aged twenty-eight. He was discharged in July 1916 under the Military Services Act 1916. This could possibly be through ill health or “as a member of the regular or reserve forces or of the Territorial Force who are liable for foreign service or who are, in the opinion of the Army Council, not suitable for foreign service”.

He attested 17/02/14 at Somercotes, aged 28 years 7 month; a married carter for J A Taylor. His height was 5ft 10½in and next of kin his mother Mrs M Lowe of King Street Alfreton. He was born at Crich.
