Biography
Herbert, born at Crich, was the son of a German father. He was employed as a coal miner. In 1918 his father was interned by the Aliens’ Advisory Committee, though was released before Christmas. Herbert enlisted in 1915, and was later attached to the Foresters. In 1918, he received a gunshot wound to the neck. Returning to Belper, he married Mary Pickering in 1921.
